Amigas had these processors:
- The 68000 was in Amiga 1000 (1985), 500 (1987), 2000 (1987), 500 Plus (1991), 600 (1992) and in CDTV (1991).
- The 68010 was never used in an Amiga.
- The 68020 worked in Amiga 1200 (1993), Access (1998), 1300 (1997), 1400 (1997), 1500 (1997) and in CD32 (1993).
- The 68030 was used by Amiga 3000 (1990), Access (1998) and the low-cost-version of Amiga 4000 (1993).
- The 68040 was used in the professional-version of Amiga 4000 (1993) and in Amiga 5000 (1998).
- The 68060 is only used in Amiga 6000 (1998).
- The PPC 603 only exists on accelerator boards.
- The PPC 604 is also used only on accelerator boards.
Further information:
These 68k processors are / were also used by Apple's Mac.
- 68000:
It had a clock rate of 7 MHz. Internal it worked with 32 Bit, external only 16 Bit.
- 68EC020:
This processor has a clock rate of 14 / 28 / 33 MHz and works internal with 32 Bit and external with 24 Bit. This processor has no MMU (Memory Management Unit; controls memory access). The MMU is realized by an additional processor, the MC 68851.
- 68EC030:
It has a clock rate of 25 / 42 / 50 MHz and works both internal and external with 32 Bit. This processor has MMU. It can be exchanged without problems with a 68030 (with MMU).
- 68040:
It has a clock rate of 25 / 33 / 40 MHz and works both internal and external with 32 Bit. This processor has a MMU and a FPU (FPU=Floating Point Unit; accelerates calculations with floating point numbers]). The 68040.library must be stored in directory LIBS: , otherwise the Amiga won't work.
- 68060:
This processor is the last one of the 68000 generation. It has a MMU and a FPU and a clock rate of 50 / 65 / 75 MHz. It works both internal and external with 32 Bit. The 68060.library (but the filename is 68040.library) must be stored in directory LIBS: , otherwise the Amiga won't work.
New processors by Motorola that are used in Amigas:
These are even used in Mac. They're much faster than the 68k family and can keep track with Intel Pentium.
- PPC 604:
The current models have a clock rate of 180 / 200 / 233 Mhz.
- PPC 603:
The current models have a clock rate of 160 / 200 / 250 Mhz.
Other processors:
- 68010:
This processor has a clock rate of 7 MHz. It is compatible to the 68000, but was never used in any AMIGA. Compared to the 68000 its power is 10% bigger.
- 68851:
MMU (Memory Management Unit) for the 68020/68EC020
- 68881:
A coprocessor with a clock rate of 25 MHz. It is an external FPU.
- 68882:
Improved version of 68881.
